Germany licensed online sports betting nationally in 2021 and wrapped it in rules designed to slow players down: a 1,000 euro monthly deposit limit shared across every licensed operator, live betting restricted to a few markets, a tax on every stake and a central self-exclusion file. Safe, reliable and expensive. Here are the three that scored best in our tests with a German account.
The 2021 Interstate Treaty created a single licence for sports betting, administered since 2023 by the GGL in Halle, and a white list of licensed operators. Two databases enforce the consumer rules: LUGAS tracks deposits across operators so the 1,000 euro monthly limit cannot be evaded, and OASIS holds self-exclusions checked at every login. Live betting is allowed only on final results and the next scoring event in most sports; player props and corners in play are not offered. The tax of 5.3 percent on stakes is paid by the operator and shows in the odds, which are wider than the same brands offer in Austria or the UK; our GGL page explains the rules in detail.
Tipico, the market leader with shops in most towns, bet365 and Bwin lead the licensed market beside Betano, Interwetten, Betway and the German brands. Unlicensed international platforms are blocked and payment providers are required to refuse them; they are used regardless by bettors who reject the deposit limit, at their own risk.
Payments are PayPal, Klarna’s Sofort transfer, cards, Paysafecard and Trustly; withdrawals to PayPal arrived within a day in our tests and to cards in two.
Ranked by our test score. All three are on the GGL white list.
