Hungary kept online sports betting as a state monopoly, TippmixPro from the national lottery, until 2023, when a new law let private operators apply for licences from the SZTFH. The first licences went to LVBet and to the large European groups; the list is still short and growing. Winnings from licensed sites are tax-free. Here are the three that scored best in our tests with a Hungarian account.
Until 2023 the only legal online sportsbook was TippmixPro, run by Szerencsejáték Zrt., and foreign sites were blocked by the tax authority; bettors used them anyway. The 2023 amendment created a licence for private operators, administered by the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities, SZTFH, with a fee, a Hungarian presence requirement, verification with a document and connection to the state’s exclusion register. LVBet was first through the door; bet365 and other European groups followed, and the list changes as applications are decided. Unlicensed sites remain blocked, with payment restrictions added.
TippmixPro remains the largest by habit, with lottery outlets in every town selling betting slips; the private entrants compete on price and product. Margins on the Hungarian league and European football sit around six percent at the state operator and lower at the newcomers. Winnings from licensed operators are exempt from income tax; winnings from unlicensed sites are, in principle, taxable.
Payments are cards, bank transfers and, at the state operator, cash at lottery outlets; card withdrawals took two days in our tests, bank withdrawals one.
Ranked by our test score. All three hold a Hungarian licence.
The former monopoly and still the biggest brand, with lottery outlets in every town, a full football and handball menu, live betting and bank withdrawals within a day. Prices are wider than the new private entrants; the trust and the network are the draw.
bet365 obtained a Hungarian licence after the 2023 opening and brings the live menu and streaming to a market that had neither; bank withdrawals within a day in our test.
The first private operator licensed under the 2023 rules, a Malta-based brand with a Polish background, a fast app, competitive prices on the big leagues and bank withdrawals within a day in our test.
bet365 is the operator in our ranking with a Hungarian licence at the time of writing; the list is growing and the international platforms remain blocked.
Cards and bank transfers everywhere; cash at lottery outlets for TippmixPro.
