The Netherlands opened its online market in October 2021 after years of monopoly, licensed the European groups and the Dutch lottery’s TOTO, and then tightened the rules as fast as any country in Europe: a ban on untargeted advertising in 2023, deposit limits in 2024, a national self-exclusion register checked at every login. How betting works in the Netherlands
The Kansspelautoriteit licenses operators, who verify identity through the bank or with a document, connect to CRUKS, the central exclusion register, and apply the consumer rules: a monthly deposit limit set by the player, with a default cap and a lower one for players under 25, mandatory contact when limits are approached, and no bonuses for younger players. Advertising is confined to targeted channels; sports sponsorship by gambling brands was phased out. Unlicensed sites are fined and blocked; our regulators page lists the KSA beside the others.
