Best bookmakers in Nigeria

Nigeria is the largest betting market in Africa and, since a Supreme Court ruling in late 2024, one regulated by its states rather than the federal government: the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority and its counterparts license operators, and the national commission’s role has shrunk. Bet9ja, SportyBet and Betway lead; 1xBet, Betwinner and 22Bet hold local licences. Here are the three that scored best in our tests with a Nigerian account.

How betting works in Nigeria

For years operators held a federal licence from the National Lottery Regulatory Commission and state permits on top; the Supreme Court decided in November 2024 that lotteries and gaming fall to the states, and Lagos, where most operators are based, has since been the licence that matters, with other states following. Licensed sites verify identity with the national identification number or the bank verification number, and the states publish their lists. Unlicensed sites are common and rarely blocked.

Bet9ja, the Nigerian leader with agents in every neighbourhood, SportyBet, Betway, BetKing, NairaBet, 1xBet and Betwinner hold licences and sponsor Nigerian football. Prices on the Premier League, the most-bet competition in the country, sit around six to eight percent margin; accumulators dominate the betting culture. Winnings are not taxed in the player’s hands under current rules; proposals to change that recur.

Payments are bank transfers, cards, USSD codes, the Paystack and Flutterwave gateways and the Opay and PalmPay wallets; bank withdrawals arrived within hours in our tests.
