Tennis betting: markets, surfaces, retirements and the rules that differ between bookmakers

Two players, no draw, a match every hour of the day: tennis is the second most liquid market in the world and the one where the bookmakers’ own rules decide more bets than the players do.

Key points

  • Retirement rules differ between operators: some settle after one ball, some after one set, some only if the match is completed. Know which before you bet.
  • Surface changes everything: the same player is a different price on clay, grass and hard court.
  • Live tennis moves faster than any other market; the delay and the suspension are the bookmaker’s edge.

The markets

Match winner. The liquid market, priced at 2 to 4 percent on the tour level. Set betting. The exact score in sets, wider margins, useful when you expect a straight-sets result. Games handicap and total games. The tennis equivalents of the football handicap and totals, where a dominant favourite can be backed at a fair price by giving games. Set winner and game markets in play. Fast, volatile and expensive in the closing games.

The retirement rule

Nothing in tennis loses more money to careless bettors than this. If a player retires injured, some operators void all bets unless the match is completed; some pay out if at least one set was completed; some pay out after one ball is served. The same bet on the same match can be a win, a void or a loss depending on where it was placed. The rule is in the sports rules section of the terms; read it once for each operator you use. Among our twenty-two, the exchange settles only completed matches, most European brands settle after one set, and several international platforms settle after the first ball.

The same match, three outcomes. You back the favourite at 1.50. She leads a set and a break, then retires. Operator A (first ball rule): winner, paid 1.50. Operator B (one set rule): winner, paid. Operator C (completed match rule): void, stake returned. Back the underdog instead and A and B pay nothing, C refunds. Choose the rule that suits how you bet.

Surfaces

Clay rewards defenders and endurance, grass rewards servers and quick points, hard courts sit between. A big server priced at 1.60 on grass can be 2.20 on clay a fortnight later against the same opponent, and the market sometimes lags the transition, especially in the first week of the clay and grass seasons. Surface records, not overall rankings, are the starting point.

The lower tiers

Challenger, ITF and the smaller WTA events carry wider margins, thinner information and the industry’s integrity problems; the sport’s own investigators report most suspicious matches at this level. Value exists, but so does the risk of betting into a match that has been decided elsewhere. Stakes should be small and the market’s late moves respected.

Live tennis

Momentum is real and priced: a break of serve moves the match price ten to twenty points in seconds, and the market suspends on every point. The bet delay and the stream lag, described in our live guide, are larger obstacles in tennis than in any other sport. The bettors who profit in play are those with a view on fitness, on a player’s record from a set down, and on scheduling: a fifth match in five days shows in the third set.

Where to bet tennis

The exchange for the fairest price and the safest retirement rule; bet365 for streams and market depth; the Asian bookie and the 1xBet platforms for games handicaps at competitive prices. Check the retirement rule at each before the first bet.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my bet if a player retires?

It depends on the operator: void, paid after one set or paid after one ball. Read the sports rules.

Is tennis a good sport for live betting?

The most liquid, and the fastest; the delay works against you unless you have a genuine view.

Why does the same player have different odds on clay?

Surfaces change the balance between serve and return; surface records matter more than rankings.
