One game a week per team, a market that moves from Monday to Sunday, and a scoring system that makes some numbers matter far more than others. How the NFL market works and how to bet it without paying for the sportsbook’s advertising.
Spread. The favourite gives points at -110 each side. Moneyline. The winner outright. Total. Combined points, typically in the 40s. Teasers. A parlay where you move the spread in your favour by six points on each leg, at reduced odds; the one parlay that can be a fair bet, when it crosses the key numbers. Props. Yards, touchdowns, receptions, priced with wide margins and low limits. Same-game parlays. The product American sportsbooks were built to sell.
Field goals are worth three and touchdowns seven, so final margins cluster: about fifteen percent of games are decided by exactly three points and nearly ten percent by exactly seven. A spread of 3 pushes on those games; a spread of 2.5 wins them; a spread of 3.5 loses them. The market charges for the half point: moving from -3 to -2.5 costs twenty cents or more of price, and buying it is usually worth it; buying from 4 to 3.5 is not. Learning the key numbers is most of what separates NFL bettors from NFL fans.
Lines open on Sunday evening for the following week, at low limits, and the first moves come from professional money on Monday. Injury reports arrive Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with the Friday report settling who plays; a starting quarterback’s status moves a line by three to seven points. Weather matters for totals in outdoor stadiums from November: wind above 15 miles an hour takes points off a total, and the market adjusts by Saturday. By Sunday morning the line has been priced by everyone, and the closing line is the best estimate that exists.
Once worth three points, now closer to one and a half in most stadiums, and near zero in some; the market has followed. Divisional games, revenge games and prime-time games produce narratives that the market prices better than the narratives deserve.
In the United States, the licensed sportsbooks on our country page, state by state; in Canada, Ontario’s licensed operators. Elsewhere, bet365, the exchange and the European brands price the NFL competently; the 1xBet platforms carry the games with wider margins. Shop the spread across operators: a half point at the right number is worth more than any promotion.
Same-game parlays combine correlated outcomes at a price that assumes independence and then adds margin: our measurements put typical three-leg builders at 20 to 30 percent margin. They are the most advertised product in American betting because they are the most profitable for the operator. Bet singles on the spread at the best number and let the advertising pay for someone else.
Final margins that occur most often, 3 and 7; a spread on or off them is a different bet.
After the Friday injury report, at the best available number, unless you have a reason to bet the opening line.
As entertainment; the margin is 20 percent and more.
